Making Research Guides with Joomla - 2007/05/31 18:34 Hi, I am very, very new to Joomla, and am attempting to create some research guides for my college library. The IT department installed Joomla, as well as an extension called Bookmarks, which is describes as a component to manage your links/bookmarks like Weblinks but with hierarchical multi-categories.

In theory, it sounded like the perfect thing for what I was trying to accomplish, because it allows me to link a a resource to both a subject (e.g. Art) and to its resource type (e.g. Online Database). The user can search by subject or resource type.

Unfortunately, if a user clicks on a subject, the only display option for the resources is alphabetical, which just won't work for what I need. What I would like is to sub sort the list by resource type within the subject list.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can accomplish what I want?

Here is the site I'm testing:
http://webbeta.albion.edu/library

Thanks for your any assistance you can give me!

Re:Making Research Guides with Joomla - 2007/05/31 20:20 I wanted to add that when I click on a subject (American Literature) and then click "by Cats Grouped" it returns ALL the items, and not just the ones for that specific category. How can I limit the list by the (subject) category, but sub-sorted by resource category?

Thanks for your help!

Re:Making Research Guides with Joomla - 2007/05/31 20:55 I never used the Bookmarks component, but what you are trying to accomplish sounds very similar to a project I'm working on right now, which is revamping SCSL Online Resources section. The end product will work similar to Charleston County Library's Online Resources.

I'm using a component called AlphaContent, which was recommend to me by another JIL member. You could see a Demo Here.

So far, I'm very please with it.

Re:Making Research Guides with Joomla - 2007/05/31 21:31 Thank you very much! I appreciate your fast response. I will check out the demo.

P.S. I attended your Joomla demo at CIL 2007 and really enjoyed it.

Alpha Content with the Alpha Content modules may do it.

Re:Making Research Guides with Joomla - 2007/10/04 18:19 I too am looking for some sort of component to manage research databases within Joomla.

Bob, you mention Alpha Content. Can you provide any feedback or comments as to how this is working out for you?

If anyone else has a recommendation based on usage, that would be great.

Thanks,

Larry

Re:Making Research Guides with Joomla - 2007/10/04 22:32 Hey, thanks for pointing me to your article Tao.

It seems you made a lot of useful enhancements/modifications to the component. Are you willing to share those?

One additional item I'm interested in is the ease of staff adding/editing/deleting new resources.
