Hello from Columbia, MD - 2007/04/23 12:51 Hi,

I'm Beth Tribe, Coordinator of Software Support and Training at Howard County Library in Columbia, MD.

I'm sort of a "Jacqueline of all trades" which suits me just fine. Some of my duties include:
  • redesigning our staff Intranet using Joomla

  • adding content to our current (yucky) web site - it is being redesigned as well(sorry not using Joomla there but our PHP/MySQL-Writer-of-scripts-that-can-do-anything Web Guru was the one who turned me onto Joomla)

  • writing FAQs and instructions for staff and customers

  • training staff in things technology related (e.g. RSS, Groovix [see below], basic desktop functions, etc.)

Our library proudly supports open source when and where we can - originally our PACs ran on LuMix to now over 370 PACs on the public floor using Groovix , to moving to OpenOffice several years ago for staff and now for public word processing suite, to many of our servers using some form of Linux and later this year (probably summer) we are moving all staff to a Linux based (Ubuntu) desktop (only glitch is they'll have to use VMware to connect to the Horizon client - damn SirsiDynix and their love of MS and client based systems).

I look forward to this community growing and hopefully I can get help here and provide some as well.

Re:Hello from Columbia, MD - 2007/04/25 11:48 Beth,

I am wondering if you have any public access scheduling solution as part of the Linux set up? I'd like to move away from proprietary software such as Envisionware PC Reservation.

Thanks
Bob

Re:Hello from Columbia, MD - 2007/04/25 16:18 We are probably a minority in that we don't do any PC reservation or print management systems in Howard County. Thankfully, with Groovix we were able to provide more PCs (able to use 7 yr. old machines that were running on NT but now on Linux with just upgrading memory as the only cost) so most of our branches don't experience any waiting problems. The smaller branches that do have been given a few more PCs lately to help alleviate their problem. We also provide wireless access in all our branches and we encourage people to bring their laptops and use the Wi-Fi instead of the PACs. So far this has worked pretty well. Occasionally we have had to deal with more people than PCs but it isn't the norm. Usually branch staff will make an announcement and kind folks will move and let someone else have time. We also "Groovixed" several of our old laptops and are going to provide them as "catalog only" if a customer can't get to one of the PACs.

Sorry, guess this doesn't help you much.
