CMS, and am very intrigued by the the things Joomla has to offer.

One of the criticisms I've read about Joomla is it isn't the best when
it comes to web standards (producing W3C compliant html/xhtml, using
tables for only tabular data, following accessibility guidelines,
etc.). I have a pretty strong interest in web standards, and I want
sites I'm responsible for to adhere to those standards.

So, for those of you actually using Joomla, how does it perform when
it comes to web standards?

Joomla is open source, which means anyone can edit and modify the source codes to fit their needs and share with others.

A Great Example for Web Accessibility with Joomla. They are also using a commercial WYSIWYG, which enforces Accessibility for their authors.

Another question is - Is your website Useable? You can fulfill your compliance guidelines, but that doesn't necessarily mean your website is useable.

One good way to find out is by User Testing- have users with different and special needs to test your website.

You mentioned that because it is open source we can modify it to meet our needs. That's great, but will it produce compliant, accessible code out of the box, or do you have to do a lot of tweaking in order to get it to produce compliant code?

You're right when you say following accessibility guidelines doesn't make your site usable. When our website when through a redesign a year or so ago the user testing we did was very worthwhile.

By the way, I was at your Computer's in Libraries presentation last month, and it was very interesting. That's what got me looking into Joomla.

An interesting conclusion of that first link:

Looking at the above criteria, all of these factors are currently controlled by the template designer, not the core of the Joomla CMS itself. The designer can create a template that incorperates good semantics, or small pages sizes. Currently the Joomla CMS does have issues where it outputs content in tables and is not using useful semantic headers (though this will be fixed in an upcoming release). However, advanced template designers are able to overcome this drawbacks and produce a template that results in a site that is accessible, usable and search engine optimized.
