Any really important things a first timer should keep in mind?

  • A vision of what I'm creating (I often borrow ideas from various websites I like)

  • Design a visual mockup of the website Interface using Photoshop

  • Slice the mockup to graphical elements and optimize them for web

  • Create the Joomla template using Joomla specific code (index.php) and construct the layout of the website using Cascading Style Sheet - template_css.css. You template will be so much more flexible if it's 100% CSS bases.

  • Make sure all files including images are referenced in templateDetails.xml

Along these lines is there anyone out there who would be willing to help/mentor someone completely new to template design?

We have a great blank slate we are working with http://mario.pls.lib.ok.us/ And I have a mock up of our concept.

and download their free Education Template. It's really useful because it's a working template and the zip file that includes the template should also include a PDF file that walks you through and explains every element of the template.

What I've done when I designed my template was I just took that free template and modified it to look like the way I wanted to, instead of starting from scratch.
