Why did you choose Joomla? - 2007/06/07 12:42 I'm going to recommend Joomla to my library over other CMSses that I tested (Drupal, ExpressionEngine) because of several reasons (they get to decide, but they're probably going to go with my informed opinion):

  • more intuitive/easier to use

  • huge user base means lots of support

  • lots of modules

  • quality of modules seems higher than Drupal's

  • open source

The only negatives of Joomla I've found so far are:

  • No versioning system. I found a module that does versioning but it doesn't seem as robust as the versioning system of some other CMSses

  • No built in ability to edit user groups and access rights for each group... have yet to explore modules for this, maybe there is a good solution

What are some of the reasons your library has chosen to use Joomla?

Re:Why did you choose Joomla? - 2007/06/07 15:14 I like what

Joomla! stands for - "All Together!"

By the same token,

Joomla in Libraries! stands for - "All Together in Libraries!"

Joomla will grow on you and with you.

I'm using Joomla because I love it!

Re:Why did you choose Joomla? - 2007/06/07 19:26 I can't remember where I read it, possibly on the Joomla site somewhere, but Joomla 1.5 Beta WILL actually allow for more permission customization based on the rights. I remember this came up because currently, the stable version does not allow one to customize the permissions to only certain sections. For example, the different sections are the different departments at my library. If I give permission to certain individuals (manager or editor..) then they can(if they wanted) add content to another department. Which I don't like of course, but that's the downside with the current stable release. In the Beta version, you will be able to specify or restrict their permission to access only certain sections. If I am recalling correctly.

This will be a great improvement for user permissions

Re:Why did you choose Joomla? - 2007/06/07 19:55 Sara, I think it's important to have an web content manager to review and approve content submitted by authors. For the following reasons:
  • Clean Coding

  • Accessibility Guidelines

  • Formatting Consistancy

  • Identify areas for improvement
You also could identify content owners. Assign content to owners (authors). That person can then update a specific page, but isn't able to edit other pages.

Re:Why did you choose Joomla? - 2007/06/07 20:13 Yeah, I understand why that makes sense, but it won't work for us at the library I work. Every department has someone who has read/write permissions so they may add their own content (policies, etc) for that department. It would be WAY too much for one person to do really. Plus, everyone does their schedules, etc slightly different based on their departments needs, etc. Again, the only downside to having multiple managers, editors, etc. is the fact that those individuals could add content (potentially) to the other sections(departments). Of course, they won't, but it would be nice if they couldn't access a particular section at all. Which is why Joomla 1.5 Beta will be great when it is stable.

In Joomla 1.5 Beta:
"User and Access Control sytem Improvements. This allows for the ability to add and edit the user groups system. It also allows for administrators to alter the access permissions based on function though the user interface. For example, you will be able to define which group(s) can install components or template, and so on. Also, we will allow for controlling permissions at the object level in a more detailed way. For example, you will be able to select sections and categories that are viewable only to certain groups."

Wish I could have a chance to play with the Intranet you developed with Joomla.

Re:Why did you choose Joomla? - 2007/06/10 15:39 Sarah [et al], i am experimenting with a component called Group Access Manager. You can download it from here: http://mamboxchange.com/projects/graccess/
Don't bother the Mambo, it works ok in joomla 1.0.12 as well.
Also take a look at the tutorial video:
