Howdy, my "real" name is Sarah and... - 2007/04/12 20:46 I am a Library and Information Science student at Wayne State University in Detroit. Additionally, I work at the Soutfield Public Library as an intern in their Technology department. I started a little over a year ago and have have been working and learning nonstop ever since.

One of my intern duties has been to research and find an open source software for the development of our library's new intranet. I initially chose Mambo, but had problems with it only to later realize Joomla is where it's at. We now have it installed and I am in the middle of testing and cutomizing it.

With that said, I hope this site grows exponentially in both its users and informative subject matter, as it is sure to provide invaluable knowledge for all of us novices. I hope to post about my experiences with Joomla soon as well. And I'm sure I'll have questions to post here on the forum.

Tak to you soon!

Re:Howdy, my "real" name is Sarah and... - 2007/04/21 15:45 Hi Sarah,

I too am using Joomla to revamp our library's Staff Intranet. A little bit of a learning curve for me but once I got in there I have been enjoying myself.

Glad to see some others embrace open source. We were beginning to feel that perhaps we were a minority in the library community (and perhaps still are although it is growing).

Our library proudly supports open source when and where we can - originally our PACs ran on LuMix to now over 370 PACs on the public floor using Groovix , to moving to OpenOffice several years ago for staff and now for public word processing suite, to many of our servers using some form of Linux and later this year (probably summer) we are moving all staff to a Linux based (Ubuntu) desktop (only glitch is they'll have to use VMware to connect to the Horizon client - damn SirsiDynix and their love of MS and client based systems).

Good luck with your Intranet!
