Some of you may have noticed that our site is now running on Joomla 1.5. We recently migrated because the latest version is a huge improvement in terms of ease-of-use, functionality, security and accessibility. I have to admit that the migration process wasn't easy, but it was well worth it. I like to share the step I have gone through and hopefully it would be helpful to you.
- Backup your existing website and database
- Audit the list of Components and module you are currently using. In our case, the two major ones are the discussion forums (joomlaboard) and community (community builder)
- Download the latest Migrator component and install it through your back-end Joomla 1.0x control panel. The Migrator component will create a migration script for you site to handle your core data including content, menus, etc.
- Install Joomla 1.5 in a separate directory. In the final installation step - where you are prompted for the site name, you are given the opportunity to upload your migration script.
- Done! Once the migration is completed, check your site for dead links, missing files/content, etc.
Sounds easy! Right? Well, things almost never go as smoothly as we want. That's just part of the fun :) In our case, the challenge was upgrading our ancient discussion board and migrating the community. In the end, we now have a much more interactive and dynamic site.
